Lettre autographe signée de Juliette Drouet.  2 pages à l'encre noire sur un double feuillet.
Lettre publiée dans les mémoires d'Alfred Asseline, Victor Hugo intime: mémoires, correspondances, documents inédits, p. 287-289 ; les noms propres ont tous été réduits à leur initiale, sauf un (Kesler).

Belle lettre de Juliette Drouet, le grand amour de Victor Hugo, à Alfred Asseline, cousin-germain d'Adèle Hugo et habitué de Hauteville-féérie, la maison de Drouet à Guernesey. 

Installée depuis 1864 à Guernesey dans la maison du 20 rue Hauteville acquise par l'écrivain, Drouet souffrait de son isolation "ma pauvre petite hospitalité trop courte, malheureusement est plus que récompensée ; vous avoir tous c'était déjà un bien grand bonheur pour ma solitude [...] Je voudrais bien que le groupe de Bruxelles se reformat à Guernesey ce qui serait je le sais une Great attraction pour vous tous, nos amis chers de Jersey". 
Au moment de l'écriture, elle est partie à Bruxelles avec Hugo, qui s'attelle à l'écriture de l'Homme qui rit. L'atmosphère s'est détendue avec Adèle Hugo, comme l'atteste le ton de cette lettre : "Bruxelles n'est pas tout a fait usé pour cette chère et charmante famille Hugo". Elle sera même parfois invitée aux repas familiaux à Bruxelles, et assistera aux séances de lecture du nouveau roman de l'écrivain.
Nostalgique de ses années à Jersey, elle cite dans la lettre les fidèles amis avec qui ils occupèrent leurs jours d'exil : Hennett de Kesler, compagnon des barricades de décembre 1851, et Edouard-Guillaume Bonnet-Duverdier, journaliste républicain qui suivit le même chemin d'exil qu'Hugo, à Jersey puis Guernesey : "Le toast attendri de M. Duverdier à Moulin Huet a été accueilli ici avec une profonde et cordiale émotion."
