Original photographic portrait of Winston Churchill by Paul Popper. A very small tear on the photograph on Churchill's chair. Traces of adhesive and annotations in pen on the back of the photograph.
Exceedingly rare portrait of Winston Churchill with a precious signed and dated inscription "with compliments dec '1953". The Prime Minister is pictured in the Cabinet Room of 10 Downing Street on his 79th birthday on November 30, 1953.
The photograph was taken on the eve of Churchill's departure to the Bermuda conference during his second term as Prime Minister. A tightly framed version of this portrait was reproduced on the cover of Country Life Magazine (January 28, 1966, Vol. CXXXVII No. 3543).
This striking portrait marks the consecration of his political and literary career, after being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and receiving a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II the same year.
From the Musée de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale in Tosny, collection Jean Erisay.
