First illustrated edition with a portrait of Emile Zola as frontispiece as well as 10 drawings by Edouard Dantan etched by Albert Duvivier and ornaments by Hector Giacomelli, one of 200 copies on Holland paper containing a single state of the etchings. Unpublished preface letter by Emile Zola. Half grey morocco with corners, spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt fleurons, gilt dates at foot, gilt fillet frames on the cat's eye paper boards, combed paper endpapers and pastedowns, original wrappers preserved, top edges gilt. A small tear at the foot of the second board of the second volume. Handsome copy.
