Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

“Evil,” admitted Ouen, “arises from the fact that there isn't always an odd number of possible solutions.”

Original autograph manuscript of Boris Vian's short story, first published in the magazine Une bouteille à la Mer, no.72, in 1952, then included in Vercoquin et le plancton and republished posthumously in the 1970 collection Le Loup-Garou.
Heavily revised manuscript, written in blue ink on the recto of each sheet, with corrections in purple ink and black pencil.

*

The eponymous “pénible histoire” (“painful story”) is the one told by the so-called “andouillette bleue” to her temporary benefactor, following a conversation on whether it is better to jump upstream or downstream of the bridge when contemplating suicide. Between a mother in “concubinage alterné avec un archevêque et un commissaire de police” and a father growing “sur son lopin de terre (...) place de l'Opéra (...) des artichauts, au nez et à la barbe des conducteurs d'autobus”, the girl seems to offer a glimpse of Vian’s future songs.

A splendid manuscript, encapsulating all the irreverence and narrative inventiveness of the brilliant butcher of language, who might easily be mistaken for his near-homonym protagonist.

- Je vous dois ?
- Tant, dit le garçon.
- Voici, dit Ouen, en donnant plus.
