First edition in French, one of 11 numbered copies on Madagascar paper, deluxe copy. Illustrated work with a frontispiece photographic portrait of the author. Ernst Toller was a pacifist militant, anarchist who participated in establishing the ephemeral Bavarian Council Republic, alongside Gustav Landauer and Erich Mühsam. He would commit suicide in exile in the United States, despairing at the triumph of Nazism, thus preceding Stefan Zweig in death. Very fine and rare copy.
