The subject of this novel, which follows the career of a French soldier from Toulouse to Casablanca, is clearly inspired by the life of its author, himself a soldier and colonial writer. As the inscription indicates, at the time of publication Jean Renaud was editor of the Casablanca daily La Presse marocaine .
