First French edition, published around June 15, 1816, only a few days after the London edition.
Our copy bears all the features of the second state of the Parisian edition: with the London address preceding that of Paris on the title page, then, on the verso, the absence of the warning to counterfeiters and, at the end of the volume, page 228, the absence of the printer's name.
Small marginal lacks to the temporary covers, upper joints slightly cracked at head, a small tear on the title page, a former owner having added the word "par" on the title page above the author's name, he also copied a critique of the work by Honoré de Balzac at the foot of the last page of text.
Our copy is presented in a full burgundy morocco chemise, spine with four raised bands set with double gilt fillets and decorated with quintuple gilt compartments, boards decorated with a frame of gilt fillets creating a perspective effect, burgundy watered silk endpapers and pastedowns, frame of quintuple gilt fillets on the pastedowns, slipcase edged with burgundy morocco, marbled paper boards, pink felt interior, elegant set signed by Creuzevault.
Rare copy in original wrappers and uncut of one of the most important novels of the 19th century.
