First edition printed in a small number of copies at the author's expense and never put on sale, no deluxe copies were printed. This is a set of proof copies, with blank covers, that the author distributed to his friends. The author's name and the title of the work have been written in black ink on the unlettered spine; the front cover, also blank, bears a printed stamp "épreuves" as well as the author's name and the title of the work written in pencil. As the Axis forces lost momentum, Jacques Chardonne attempted to retrieve most of the copies he had given away in order to destroy them. A rare and handsome copy given the very poor quality of wartime paper.
