Selection of 30 original drawings, watercolors, ink drawings

Exceptional set of 100 drawings and vignettes by George Barbier, including original inks, watercolors and inks/drawings on calque, mounted on modern Canson paper. Many of the drawings or vignettes are signed, intialed, or include annotations by Barbier or measurements intended for the publisher. The set includes numerous project drawings, preparatory sketches, some very accomplished or even finalized, notably for Guirlande des mois, La Gazette du Bon Ton, Modes et manières d'aujourd'hui, Les plus belles heures d'amour de Casanova, Le Tombeau de Bilitis, and numerous ink vignettes intended for magazines La Vie Parisienne (with the initials V.P. annotated by Barbier) and probably Femina.
Including:
- Two finalized sketches for the slipcases, covers and dust jackets of Guirlande des mois (One sheet of original mock-ups for the title page, folder and case of Guirlande des mois from 1920, accompanied by sketches; one sheet of original mock-ups for the cover of Guirlande des mois from 1921, accompanied by sketches).
- Several original inks and drawings for illustrations of La Guirlande des mois:
"Les Rubans": 1 original ink for a full-page plate from the Guirlande des mois of 1918
"Asia" and "America": 1 sheet with four original ink washes, two of them preparatory for the 1921 Guirlande des mois.
"La Guêpe": Original drawing for a vignette in the Guirlande des mois of 1921
- 3 exceptional pencil and ink drawings for in-text illustrations for the Gazette du Bon Ton (no. 8 of 1922, pages 248 and following), with each of the 2 states with a sketch in ink by Barbier intended for the pochoir colors (pink and silver), glued to tracing paper, giving 3 states of the costume signed and dated 1922
- 1 ink and graphite sketch signed, preparatory to the print published in Modes et manières d'aujourd'hui, 1914 under the title "Arlequin" (pl. XIII).
- 1 original pencil drawing of an oriental dance couple, probably unpublished, probably intended for his book of illustrations in tribute to the famous dancer Nijinsky.
- "Mariage transatlantique" - 1 original graphite drawing, preparatory study for a full-page print from La Vie Parisienne (23.9x28.3cm)
- Set of ink drawings for La Vie Parisienne (often annotated in Barbier's hand "V.P.") in vignettes or slightly larger format
- 3 small drawings pasted on Canson paper: 2 enhanced watercolors depicting American Indians, similar to the plate "Le Long Du Missouri" in Falbalas Et Fanfreluches, 1923, and 1 enhanced ink depicting a sphinx and an elongated figure
- 1 Indian ink and chalk drawing accompanied by a 1 preparatory sketch, entitled Reminiscence, published in Les Artistes du livre. Georges Barbier (Paris, Henry Barbou, 1929).
- A large project for a vase on tracing paper, graphite heightened with ink (25.8x32.3cm)
- 1 sheet of original preparatory studies in graphite heightened with ink for a full-page plate and in-text vignette published in Les plus belles heures d'amour de Casanova (Paris, Crès et Cie, 1923).
- Original watercolor, preparatory study for an illustration of Le Tombeau de Bilitis
- A charming watercolor ink depicting frogs (probably for La Vie Parisienne)
- 1 large pencil and ink drawing of a costume for Mistinguett at the Folies Bergères, depicting the cabaret dancer accompanied by a second dancer.
- 3 advertising projects (1 large advertising illustration project for "Poudre discrète" J.C. Boldoot, Brussels, in pencil heightened with Indian ink and blue ink; 1 draft illustration for an advertisement for "Toiles de soie naturelle", pencil drawing; 1 draft illustration for an advertisement for "Parfum tendre", Rigaud, in pencil and Indian ink).
- 1 large drawing on Japon paper in ink enhanced with watercolor depicting an elegant woman placing the laurel wreath on a pillar statue (22.4x32.4cm)
- A large original drawing in Indian ink signed with his pseudonym E, Larry and dated 1909 depicting a festive scene (24x32cm)
