First edition of the French translation, with no copies printed on deluxe paper. A handsome copy. Illustrated. Inscribed and signed by Volker Schlöndorff to Jean Claval, with a dated autograph dedication. Volker Schlöndorff began his career as an assistant to Alain Resnais on "L'année dernière à Marienbad," to Jean-Pierre Melville on "Le doulos" and "Léon Morin prêtre," and to Louis Malle on "Le feu follet" and "Viva Maria!"—the latter encouraging him to direct his first feature film in 1966, "Les désarrois de l'élève Törless," based on the novel by Robert Musil. He would go on to adapt several other literary works for the screen, including "Le coup de grâce" by Marguerite Yourcenar, "Le tambour" by Günther Grass, and "Le roi des aulnes" by Michel Tournier.
