First French edition translated from the seventh English edition. Contemporary full brown calf binding, marbled and glazed. Smooth spine decorated. Red morocco title-label. Headcap abraded. Upper joint cracked at head for 5cm. Traces of rubbing. Good copy. Scottish Protestant author whose sermons focus essentially on reserve and modesty, reserve and modesty in dress, reserve and modesty in conversation, etc. Doubtless such moral preoccupations could only emerge in the late 18th century and under the Empire, which turned their backs on these vestimentary restrictions, the face of a prudish morality intended to conceal all femininity; a large part of the 19th century would, on the contrary, realize these precepts with great efficiency.
