Deceased in 1794, "Le cardinal des plaisir" according to the title of Jean-Marie Rouart's eponymous novel, was first a poor poet before being introduced into the salons and notably that of Madame de Pompadour who launched his brilliant political career, since he was successively minister and secretary of state for foreign affairs. His gallant verses, which Voltaire mocked, opened the doors of the Académie française to him at 29 years old.
