First edition, scarce. Contemporary rigid full vellum binding. Smooth Jansenist spine. Brown sheep title label with small lacks. Stains. Good copy. Bookplate with flourished monogram, Château de Rosny with the motto: La solitude. This is from the library of the Duchess of Berry. The most famous work by the lord of Maurier, these memoirs which also evoke France's foreign policy (notably Protestant), and which form a classic of the history of the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, consists of eight different parts: Maurice De Nassau, Henri Frederic, Jean Barnevelt, François Aerssens, Hugo Grotius, Louise de Coligny. On the endleaf before the title, 19th-century manuscript writing on the author's life.
