Story of the son of the King of Sweden who finds himself transported through the air by means of a cloud and winds and finds himself in Spain where we witness his adventures. The reader's notice specifies: "Les avantures dont je parle ne sont pas chimériques [...] Elle sont tirées de l'histoire secrette de Suède." ["The adventures I speak of are not chimerical [...] They are drawn from the secret history of Sweden."]. The approbation is signed by Father Richard and notes the sweet pleasure and amusement of this tale which follows in the footsteps of Cyrano. La vieille précieuse is a short comedy, in which we see an elderly lady whose new attire allows her to seduce again. Legrand was a famous actor and playwright of the 17th century; he wrote about forty plays, including one about Cartouche, the famous bandit, whom he even visited in his prison to give his play more realism.

A tale set in an imaginary country in South America between two peoples, the moon-worshipping Amazons, and the sun-worshipping Solinians. The story begins with the abduction by the Amazons of the prince of the Solinians. It is a marvelous tale, in the tradition of oriental tales of the period, including fairies and magic and a love story. The author presents in his epistle his work as a masterpiece, a work "as beautiful and as useful as that one"; lightness and humor are indeed never far from the narrative.

For many years La Dixmerie would supply the Mercure with his tales almost free of charge after Marmontel's departure, and most of the 24 titles in this collection appeared there. They belong to all genres of tales: marvelous, oriental, moralist and historical. The author explains in the preface his use of the epithet "philosophical" added to his tales, mocking this term applied at the time to everything and anything, and which he used because it was fashionable and because all his tales could serve as a pretext for moralizing. One can distinguish a talent for lightness and satire.

Armorial copy of the Rohan Chabot family, certainly, given the date of the edition, of Louis-Antoine de Rohan-Chabot, known as the Chevalier de Rohan. 2 mascles and two chabot fish crowned in the corners. We know that the library of Cardinal de Rohan (famous!) bore mascles on the spine as a stamp.

Le chevalier du soleil is a translation of the Spanish chivalric romance by Diego Orthunez de Calahorra, the first part of which appeared in 1555; the later sequels, second and third parts, are not by the author. Interesting preface by the Marquis de Paulmy, famous medievalist of the time, who affirms that the Amadis cycle is a sequel to the Chevalier du soleil. A table of contents allows one to trace the chronology of each character. The Marquis de Paulmy and his colleague Contant d'Orville did not merely translate Le chevalier du soleil; they compiled not only the sequels to the Histoire du chevalier du soleil, but also the last 21 Amadis romances, and the Roman des romans by Duverdier, which allows one to follow the destiny of all the characters of Spanish romance chivalry across two books. More strange seems the introduction of music in scores and songs by Philidor and Grétry celebrating chivalry, testimony to the 18th century's perception of romance chivalry.

Like Walpole's Castle of Otranto, The Recess is one of the first Gothic novels, not yet inhabited by the formulas and stereotypes that would exhaust the genre itself, but it already contains all the ingredients that would make it successful: spleen, melancholy, terror, settings of ruined castles and abbeys, secrets surrounding an obscure birth. This novel above all marks the superiority of English fiction, with a plot and narrative writing much more mature and developed than The Castle of Otranto. Two sisters live in the underground chambers of a castle, and the novel gradually unfolds the discovery of this strange situation. We read in the Historical, Literary and Anecdotal Memoirs drawn from the correspondence of Grimm and Diderot: "it is the story of a daughter of Mary Stuart and the Duke of Norfolk, a tissue of romantic incidents, sad, implausible, but whose sequence has nevertheless I know not what charm that can engage readers who love this kind of work."

In this fictional work, Maillet establishes important theories that he forged through his geological studies in Egypt and in Arabic countries, where he was also able to consult rare manuscripts of scientific theories. He believes that the earth is in fact a star and that it lives according to perpetual cycles that will lead it once again to become similar to the sun. This treatise is, moreover, known for bearing the premises of Darwinian evolutionary theory, with Maillet making the sea the origin of all living beings. Maillet's contemporaries did not admire his materialistic theories, which appear today so avant-garde and revolutionary.
Maillet was consul general of France in Egypt, and he produced several works on this country whose profound knowledge transformed his vision of the origin of the earth and geological theories.

Studies by the famous scholar and learned Isaac Vossius on the oracles and predictions that preceded the birth of Christ. Follow the objections and criticisms, then Vossius's response. At the end of his life, Vossius was settled in England where he was appointed canon of Windsor; this writing appears to date from his English period.

An erotic tale, the Sylphe, a spirit appearing to a woman weary of men, is the demon of masturbation.

Certainly erroneous mention of 28th edition, the 1824 edition itself being noted as 25th. Illustrated with 28 out-of-text plates in the taste of the late 18th century, unsigned. The first edition and the following ones contained only 7 figures. The first edition of this work seems to date from 1694.

This book by Pomey, 17th century author, was translated by Andrew Tooke. It contains an index of names of all the deities of mythology. The reading is interesting in more ways than one, Pomey explaining the meaning of mythological allegories; we thus learn that Bacchus would be Moses. The plates represent the Gods and deities, accompanied by medals.

Considered the first French anti-utopia, this journey of a Frenchman weary of his country's ills to an island inhabited by effeminate characters, made-up and devoted to festivities and pleasures, is a satire of the disorders of Henri III's court, himself represented by king Hermaphroditus, woman king or man queen. The work brought considerable notoriety to its author, of whom little is known except that he left several scholarly translations. The work, which was compared to the Satyre ménipée, was presented to Henri IV, who forbade anyone from troubling the author.
