    The rare first edition, only published in Portuguese of this important political text by Jean-Paul Sartre, written in Cuba in 1960. The text was not published in France except in the form of articles in France-Soir, before first appearing in its complete form in 2008 in the journal Les Temps Modernes. Both a reportage on Castro and a fierce critique of American policy during Batista's dictatorial rule, this essay on the Cuban revolution is preceded by an unpublished preface by Sartre and followed by articles by the Brazilian thinkers Fernando Sabino and Rubem Braga.

    Jules Vallès has received the request from a journalist to insert his article in the next issue of "Le Cri du peuple", but he will not be able to honor it favorably: "J'ai vu la direction du journal, et malheureusement, il sera de toute impossibilité de vous faire même la plus petite place dans le Cri."

    A hero of the battle of Bir Hakeim, he was wounded during the Italian campaign and again in the fighting to liberate Toulon. He was flag-bearer for the 1st Marine Infantry Battalion during the victory parade on the Champs-Elysées.

    This portrait was taken by Charles Gerschel on September 27, 1899 in the garden of Dreyfus' brother-in-law Joseph Valabrègue in Carpentras. A week after his official pardon, the captain had come to Carpentras seeking isolation and rest while awaiting his rehabilitation.
