Like Walpole's Castle of Otranto, The Recess is one of the first Gothic novels, not yet inhabited by the formulas and stereotypes that would exhaust the genre itself, but it already contains all the ingredients that would make it successful: spleen, melancholy...

Contemporary full marbled blonde sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Beige morocco title-label. Head fragile. Joint cracked at head. One corner slightly bumped. A slight lack to right margin of title page. A label bearing Barrois's address has been pasted over the address on the title page.
Current state of knowledge and remedies against venereal diseases. Many observations of particular cases at the end of the work are interesting. Examination of remedies, mercury naturally, but also dandelion juice. This treatise stands out as being the eminent work of a practitioner, and not of a theorist.

Full marbled sheep bindings, smooth spines richly decorated with gilt decorative motifs, red morocco title and volume labels, traces of rubbing on spines, rubbed headcaps with small lacks, small worming with three small holes and a lack to the title label of volume 1, one joint of volume 1 cracked, one joint of volume 2 slightly cracked at foot, corners bumped, contemporary bindings.
One pen annotation on the rear endpaper of volume 2, very occasional foxing.
