Half caramel calf binding, smooth spine decorated with a wide gilt garland and gilt fillets, gilt friezes at head and foot, discreet restorations to the joints, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, marbled edges.

The first edition was published in 1686. Illustrated with three frontispieces after Challiou, engraved by Bovinet.

Caroline de Litchfield, Isabelle de Montolieu's first novel, is a story rich in dramatic twists, written with ease and still read with pleasure today. This novel was published in 1786 simultaneously in Paris and London. Its success was considerable and lasting. There are even paintings inspired by the novel. Occasional foxing, some leaves of the first volume browned due to the acidity of 19th-century paper, a very slight tear at head of one leaf in the second volume.
