The first edition was published in 1686. Illustrated with three frontispieces after Challiou, engraved by Bovinet. Contemporary half sheep bindings. Smooth spine with fillets. Black title-label (and volume label). Headcaps rubbed, one worn at volume 1. Some stains. Caroline de Litchfield, Isabelle de Montolieu's first novel, is a story rich in dramatic twists, written with ease and still read with pleasure today. This novel was published in 1786 simultaneously in Paris and London. Its success was considerable and lasting. There are even paintings inspired by the novel. Reprints are known until 1835 and translations into English, Portuguese, Spanish. Isabelle Pauline Polier de Bottens, Baroness Isabelle de Montolieu (1751-1832) was a Swiss novelist. Her work includes no less than a hundred novels and numerous translations.
