    First edition, rare, illustrated with a large folding engraved map (cf. Gay 3082).

    Contemporary full marbled calf, smooth spine gilt in compartments adorned with gilt floral tools, tan morocco title label, gilt roll tooling at head and foot of spine, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, gilt fillets on board edges, red-speckled yellow edges.

    Some restoration to spine and covers, occasional foxing and slight age-toning to a few gatherings.

    Epistolary novel in which a young girl destined for retreat finds herself married against all expectations. The narrative encounters numerous intrigues and twists. This is a moral and educational work in which the author, through the character of Madame Du Montier, addresses the education of girls.     New edition, illustrated with a frontispiece and 32 plates (several heraldic figures) as well as numerous in-text coats of arms.
    Contemporary binding in full speckled blonde sheep. Spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons, and a blonde sheep title-label. All edges marbled. Head rubbed, tail missing with damage to spine, corners bumped.
    A great classic among heraldry manuals, the work was republished many times for its ease of use and precision.
