Contemporary full marbled calf binding. Smooth spine decorated. Red morocco title label. Headcaps worn. Upper joint cracked. 3 corners bumped, one cut. Some foxing, mainly in margins.
Famous libertine novel in the form of memoirs of M. de Meilcourt. To become a master libertine, Meilcourt follows the lessons of the Marquise de Lussay and her master Versac while he is in love with young Hortense de Theville. Laclos drew inspiration from this work for Les liaisons dangereuses.

First edition illustrated with 17 portraits in medallions by Bernard Picart after various painters including Van Dyck, including the frontispiece. 4 title pages in red and black. The first volume was translated by La Pilonnière, the translator of the second is unknown; this first volume had appeared in 1725 under the title: Histoire des dernières révolutions d'Angleterre.
Foreign (English?) contemporary binding in full marbled tawny sheep. Spine with raised bands very richly decorated. Red morocco title-label, decorated tan morocco volume label. A lack in the first compartment of volume I. Tail headcap of volume II worn with a lack in the compartment. Some wormholes. Scratches on some boards. Some corners slightly bumped. Despite the mentioned defects, a very handsome copy, fresh internally.
The volumes contain the history of the reign of Charles II and what preceded it, the history of James II, the history of William III and Mary II, the history of the reign of Anne I, followed by Réflexions sur l'histoire qui précède and La vie de Gilbert Burnet.

Highly esteemed edition, provided by Sigibert Havercamp. His text, revised from several manuscripts and from the editio princeps, includes numerous notes. Deluxe paper copy.
Bindings (contemporary, very slightly later) in full dark blue morocco signed Anguerrand, smooth spines decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons, as well as red morocco title labels, volume labels, date and place labels. Triple gilt fillet and fleurons framing the boards. Wide gilt dentelle framing the pastedowns. All edges gilt. Spines somewhat faded and some rubbing, otherwise fine copy. Interesting detail that traces the life of this copy: the spines were updated to contemporary taste at the end of the 18th century; the title labels, in red morocco, were changed, some moved and the compartments, originally plain, were overworked with tooling from this same period.
It appears to be the copy that figured in the catalogue of the Lamoignon library of 1791 (II, n°4292).

Edition dated as the original. According to Dufour: "Second original Parisian edition, printed in Paris, by or for Duchesne. It is this octavo edition, which served for distributions and gifts made by Rousseau and Mme de Luxembourg." It contains several corrected passages. According to Mc Eachern ("Bibliography of the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau to 1800"), it could not have been printed before 1764, despite the date of 1762 on the title. It is distinguished from the first edition by the difference in the fleurons on the title page, the characters used (which are different) and some minor details: some of the errors listed in the errata of the first edition have been corrected. This edition does not contain a half-title in volume I, conforming to the duodecimo edition. Title pages in red and black.
Contemporary full marbled brown calf binding. Decorated smooth spine. Red morocco title labels (works of Rousseau) and second title and volume labels in brown morocco. Triple fillet frame on the boards with presence of some scuffing. Headcaps of volumes I and IV worn down, headcap of volume II partly lacking. Lacking at tail of volume II. A lack along the joint of volume I, upper joint of volume II split at tail, 2 small lacks along the lower joint of volume III, lower joint of volume IV open at head with lacks, narrow split to upper joint at head. Upper corners of volumes I and II bumped. Trace of pale dampstain on the frontispiece of volume II, especially present on the spine. Volume II, from the first leaf to p. 18, trace of pale yellow dampstain at upper right corner. In volume IV, a black ink stain on the fore edge, showing a visible black line fading to page 35. Otherwise fresh throughout.
The first collected edition was published in 1764, and everything suggests that this copy which bears on its title labels: Works of Rousseau, was bound to form a set with this edition.

First edition, very rare, with all of the characteristics described by Mac Eachern (Bibliography of the Writings of Jean Jacques Rousseau to 1800, Émile, ou De l'éducation, Voltaire Foundation, 1989): page numbering printing errors (vol. 1: S8 in place of 88, 433 in place of 443, 46 in place of 465; vol. 2: 256 in place of 356 and 257 in place of 357; vol. 3: 363 in place of 383; vol. 4: the tab of the first 3 of 336 is missing), boards highlighted with asterisks (vol. 1: Av and B4; vol. 2: H3 and N6 (wrongly numbered I6)). The very last leaf ends with «FIN» and does not include bunches of grapes (Mac Eachern: «The grapes appear in three different forms.»). It is illustrated with five plates drawn by Charles Eisen, and engraved by Longueil (2), Louis le Grand (2) and Pasquier (1).
Contemporary binding in full granite-patterned calf, decorated spine, title pieces in red morocco and volume numbering in green morocco.
A tiny section of the title piece of volume 3 missing. Spine ends skillfully and delicately restored, the result is almost invisible. Splits on the joints of volume 2. A paper on the back of the first plate fills a tear in the margin. Overall, the paper is very clean, with soiling only on the first title page. All of the half-titles are present when they are often missing.

This 8vo edition of émile is the most rare and sought after. It was the format preferred by the author himself, having invested enormously in the publication of this work. According to Mac Eachern, the question of format caused lively debate between Rousseau and his publisher Duchesne, the latter of the two wanting to offer a 12mo edition as well as a smaller print run of the 8vo because it was more costly. Rousseau, despite his reluctance and thinking that the 8vo would be more sought after, reluctantly accepted Duchesne's plan. The misunderstandings between Rousseau and his publisher put the printing of the work in danger more than once.
Beautiful copy of this rare first edition.

Some titles are without place or address Neaulme Rare meeting of different parts in uniform binding Different parts seem to have appeared simultaneously in Paris and Holland..; so there was a Parisian original edition, and Dutch. Our copy combines the two runs.
Binders in full sheepskin blonde then. Back smooth decorated with parts of title and volume number of red morocco, flower boxes and small golden chains, golden lace bird tail. All edges gilt. Eight bumped corners and a few tiny scuffs. Marginal tear without lack on page 23 of Part IX.
Unfinished Marivaux, like his other novel, Le Paysan parvenu, but probably for the incompletion by its very nature, Marianne is one of the first novels published in serial. Marivaux almost abandon the company several times, although the success of the novel was considerable. Emblematic work of the ^eighteenth, the book borrows from all genres in vogue: novel of manners, learning novel, picaresque and adventure. Marianne, Countess, y tale by letters adventure of his life, or how, received nothing, she will climb the social ladder.
It is also known as Marivaux had to stop at the eighth game, but for editorial reasons, he wrote other stories to give away. Only the twelfth part is not Marivaux.
