Original engraving. Optical view heightened with watercolors, depicting Saint Eustache Church. Optical views, also known as views, perspectives or "mondo nuovo", are engravings that were very fashionable between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were intended to be observed through a set of multiple mirrors or by means of a Zograscope, an instrument consisting of a mirror and a lens. Optical views can be considered as the precursors of three-dimensional images and stereoscopes which enjoyed great success from the 19th century onwards. Optical views seem to appear in the 1740s and were parlor entertainments. The process was first developed in Paris, then London and finally in Germany and focused on representing - in an idealized manner - the most famous panoramas and landscapes of East and West. Fine impression with very fresh colors.

The commission of agriculture and arts was founded in 1794 and Parmentier was from its creation an eminent and influential member. The potato was soon perceived, thanks to Parmentier, as a means to combat famine and food shortages, whether for humans or animals.

An extraordinary pedagogue and demonstrator, Sigaud de la Fond early on attended the courses of Abbé Nollet (no less famous for his experiments in physics and electricity) whom he would succeed, and quickly established an experimental physics cabinet. His experiments were numerous and engaged many fields: electricity, but also phosphorus, toothpaste recipes, medicine... Over time, he would devote himself more fully to his physics cabinet and his experiments, even though he maintained a teaching activity admired throughout Europe.

Fourth edition produced by Lodoycus Tiletanus for the first text; this edition having been shared among multiple printer-booksellers in Paris. Printer's device on title page. Initials. Colophon: Parisiis, Excudebat Iohannes Lodoycus Tiletanus. M. D. XXXIX. Not listed in Adams. Edition found several times in the British Library catalogue but with different printers.
The second work appears to have been published for the first time in 1532. Magnificent woodcut title page, with Claude Chevallon's printer's device, Christ in glory and a nativity with the Virgin and the Magi, symbolic images representing the position of Claude Chevallon's widow. Initials. This edition is not found in English catalogues; one copy at the BNF dated 1536 published by Gilles de Gourmont.
Full brown sheep 18th-century binding. Spine with six raised bands decorated with compartments, arabesques and small gilt fleurons. Leading edges and headcaps outlined with gilt roll. All edges speckled red. A small loss at the joint of the second board and one of the leading edges. Surface abrasions. Some small wormholes.
Numerous manuscript notes on both texts, which were trimmed when the book was rebound in the 18th century. Two very faint marginal dampstains affecting a few pages, otherwise a handsome copy. 65 lines per page.
The scriptural writings of Denis the Carthusian were published from 1530 onwards and comprise 14 books; the two works we offer concern two fundamental texts of the Bible: the psalms of David and the four gospels, two collections, one from the Old Testament, the second from the New, entirely emblematic of the Catholic Church's reading of Christ's church. These commentaries were authoritative from their publication (Denis died in 1471) as they bring together all the opinions of the church fathers and theologians of his time. The multiplication of Denis's editions in the 1530s rests on the vast Counter-Reformation movement initiated by the Church. Protestantism was indeed primarily based on Bible reading, and the Catholic Church had to maintain, by drawing on its history, the exegetical monopoly. Furthermore, the Church thus relied with Denis the Carthusian on a great mystical and philosophical figure participating in spiritual and Christian renewal, moreover a canonical figure (Denis's doctrinal position being moderate, between Aristotle, Plato, and Saint Augustine), which directly opposed that of Luther, excommunicated in 1521 and outlawed from the Empire shortly after.
A 19th-century bookplate on one of the endpapers, as well as several other unidentifiable ones at the end of the first text and on the title page of the second.

Gillot. This gathering of distinguished and talented men of letters confers a scope and very literary value to the pamphlet (the Satire had successful editions until the 19th century). 'At once a comedy, a pamphlet and a coup d'état, the Satyre Ménippée paved the way for Henry IV to the throne' (P. Larousse). The collection of texts gathered for 18th-century editions, historical, pamphlet, satirical and literary texts constitute the richest testimony for the history of the League.

Rouault fait la connaissance de Léon Bloy en 1904 par l'intermédiaire d'une de ses oeuvres: « On m'apprend que le peintre Georges Rouault, élève de Gustave Moreau, s'est passionné pour moi. Ayant trouvé chez son maître "La Femme pauvre"..., ce livre l'a mordu au coeur, blessé incurablement » (Journal de L. Bloy, 16 mars 1904). Naît alors une indéfectible amitié entre les deux artistes. Cependant lorsqu'en 1905 Rouault expose au Salon d'Automne "Monsieur et Madame Poulot" inspiré du roman de Bloy, la réaction de celui-ci est violente: « ... Cet artiste qu'on croyait capable de peindre des séraphins, semble ne plus concevoir que d'atroces et vengeresses caricatures. L'infamie bourgeoise opère en lui une si violente répercussion d'horreur que son art paraît blessé à mort. Il a voulu faire mes Poulot personnages de "La Femme Pauvre". À aucun prix je ne veux de cette illustration. Il s'agissait de faire ce qu'il y a de plus tragique : deux bourgeois, mâle et femelle, complets : candides, pacifiques, miséricordieux et sages à mettre l'écume de la peur à la bouche des chevaux des constellations. Il a fait deux assassins de petite banlieue. » Nul mieux que Raïssa Maritain ne sut décrire l'amitié complexe qui unit le jeune peintre et le vieil écrivain, analysant à la fois "la raison profonde de leur dissentiment" en citant une lettre de Bloy à Rouault de 1907 : « Vous êtes attiré par le laid exclusivement. " comme leur "admiration" qu'elle explique par "la vive foi de l'un et de l'autre, (...) l'élévation et la rigueur de leur conscience d'artistes". "Combien de fois - écrit-elle - dans les années qui ont suivi, n'avons-nous pas vu Rouault chez Bloy, debout, appuyé contre le mur, un léger sourire sur ses lèvres closes, le regard au loin, le visage apparemment impassible, mais d'une pâleur qui allait s'accentuant lorsque la question de la peinture moderne était abordée. Rouault pâlissait, mais gardait jusqu'au bout un silence héroïque. Et toujours, malgré cette irréductible opposition sur la question même de son art, il est resté fidèle à Léon Bloy. On eût dit qu'il venait chercher chez Bloy les accusations mêmes qui tourmentaient en lui ce qu'il avait de plus cher, - non pour les soumettre à une discussion quelconque, mais pour éprouver contre elles la force de l'instinct qui l'entraînait vers l'inconnu et qui devait triompher de tout obstacle." Travel account established by Father Nicolas Frizon from memoirs written by a missionary during his passage through Turkey toward China, Jacques Villotte. As sea travel was very dangerous, two routes were chosen, one through Muscovy, the other through Turkey, the Jesuits hoping to convert the peoples of Tartary. Narrative established in third person beginning with the Jesuit's three-week stay in Constantinople. Followed by an ample description of caravan travels. Considerations on the Persians. City of Isfahan. Situation of the earthly paradise and considerations on ancient Babylon. Considerations on the Persians and Armenians. This is an enlightened and tolerant vision of foreign customs by a Jesuit who also dwells on the affairs and history of his order. The Jesuit Father, who departed from Marseille in 1688, reached Isfahan in October 1689 where he remained for twelve years. He did not manage to pass into China and was recalled to France.

Voiture (1597-1648) was throughout his life a gallant and a courtier, brilliant in salons and playing games. His epistolary talent earned him long popularity in France for fashionable prose, and his poetry excels in the mannered and precious tone, even though he knew how to be trivial when necessary. He is an essential figure of the literary scene of the early 17th century, a true Molière character.
Voiture is first and foremost a style, not only in his letters (Lettres amoureuses) and his poetry but also in his prose, see for example the delightful Métamorphoses. His works were in the image of the man, gallant, teaching beautiful language and fine manners to the habitués of the hôtel de Rambouillet. His fame was very great during his century and he remains an emblem for the 17th century.
