The house of Montmorency was one of the most prestigious families of the French nobility and provided France with several constables, the most illustrious being the Renaissance prince: Anne de Montmorency. The five volumes are divided as follows: The first volume is devoted to a genealogy and chronology of the Montmorency from 960 until 1531, shortly before Anne became Constable, that is to say the highest function after the king. The second volume contains the life of Anne and that of François, marshal of France, from 1494 until 1579. The third volume is occupied by several biographies: Henri, Constable of France; Charles Duke of Amville, grand Admiral of France; & that of Henri II, Duke of Montmorenci, from 1547 until 1632. The fourth and fifth volumes contain the life of François-Henri de Montmorenci, Marshal Duke of Luxembourg, from 1628 until 1695. It is in the first volume that one will find the general history of the Montmorency, notably on the Middle Ages where the Montmorency worked with brilliance, but Desormeaux's work does not claim to be exhaustive, having made choices, notably biographical ones; however the work, of great quality, is undoubtedly the best that has been devoted to this illustrious family which merges so well with that of France; thus this anecdote is told that when in 1764 the duchess of Montmorency presented Désormeaux's work to Louis XV, asking: "Does His Majesty know the history of the house of Montmorency?" the King replied: "Madame, I know the history of France."

A novel originally published in 1665, which received its first illustration in 1720, this biographical episode disguised and transformed into a Greek pastoral tells of the misfortunes and adventures that prevented and delayed Le Vayer's marriage to Mlle Servin. The varied narrative draws its inspiration from Greek and Latin novels (Heliodorus's Aethiopica) or Cervantes's Persiles and Sigismunda. This novel, quite appreciated in its time, was adapted for opera in an eponymous work by Francoeur and Rebel.

A banner bearing Charles Osmont's address has been pasted over the publisher's address; on the recto of the page one can make out in reverse "Chez Guillaume Cavelier 1700" (we do not know the reason for this substitution, or perhaps Charles Osmont shared this edition and sold it himself). New expanded edition, the first in two volumes with important tables, published at the Chancellor's request. The original first appeared in 1676; it was continued in this edition by René Le Comte for the supporting documents for the period 1676-1705, furthermore the material compiled by Tessereau was entirely reworked for this new edition.

Major source on the history of the Chancellery in France; this institution, as ancient as the monarchy, was formed by the body of chancellors such as the chancellor, the keeper of the seals, the great auditors, secretaries of the king of the grand college, the treasurers, controllers, wax-heaters and other officers (the chancellery being today nothing more than the ministry of justice). Tessereau assembled a collection of precious documents for the historian on the officers of the chancellery, their functions and prerogatives, on the various chancelleries in the kingdom... It is more a compilation and publication of documents than a historian's work, but the work is no less important.

Jacques du Four de la Crespelière (1625-1680), burlesque and licentious poet displaying in his light verses the last fires of the Baroque, the author belongs to this specifically French 17th-century genre of which Scarron is one of the most illustrious representatives. This is poetry that goes against the grain, through mockery, of mannered and emphatic baroque poetry. His collection of Divertissemens d'amour, as well as his collection of translations of Greek poets (Sappho, Anacreon, Theocritus...), and Les récréations poétiques, amoureuses et galantes, are found in all the great libraries and literary anthologies of the 18th century. The collector of literary curiosities will eagerly seek out the works of this author, notably his Commentaires sur l'école de Salerne, divine mockeries of medicine.

Restoration at head of volume I with a fawn leather piece covering the first two compartments; the first volume therefore no longer has its title label. Upper and lower joints of volume I largely cracked; joints restored on volumes 2, 3, 4; partly cracked at upper joint on volume 5. Good overall appearance. The eulogies are biographies that were read at Academy sessions, bringing together all the 18th-century members numbering 100. These speeches are often annotated for greater precision. The term eulogy should not be taken in its modern sense, as these are not only biographies and scholarly studies of a life but also critiques of a work and character, and all these lives provide precious information. Jean Le Rond d'Alembert was elected on November 28, 1754 to the French Academy. He became its perpetual secretary on April 9, 1772. This edition is the work of Condorcet. Label of J. B. Desgrand, lawyer in Annonay.

Third and best edition, the most complete, containing the edition of the Recueil des illustres maisons du Diocèse d'Amiens with its own title page dated 1642. Both works had appeared in less complete versions, respectively in 1621 and 1630. The second book bears the location after each family name of the arms which were not printed but are described in the margin; rare copies possess these arms illustrated by hand in colors. Adrian de la Morlière, canon of Amiens cathedral assembled throughout his life an incredible number of materials on the history of his city. The work proceeds in the form of articles and does not use the classic but summary form of the annals, but the articles have a chronological evolution, from the Romans to the contemporary era. One distinguishes a catalogue of bishops of Amiens, of Counts and governors or lieutenants of the city. The treatise on the Houses of Picardy contains precious information. Besides the historical elements, the author added at the end of each part numerous poems of his own composition. Although the emphasis is more essentially placed on the history of the city, one finds many paragraphs on the churches, the ramparts and the description of the city.
"Although La Morlière's work is poorly written, it is however useful & necessary, & even quite rare" notes Lenglet-Dufresnoy. To today's reader, the work will appear above all disorderly in its first part, but full of teachings about the city.
