Contemporary Bradel bindings in full purple paper boards imitating long-grain morocco, spines slightly faded, decorated with gilt fillets, friezes, and fleurons, gilt crowned monogram at the head of the spines, entirely uncut, headcaps slightly worn, some wear to the corners of volumes 3 and 4, bindings contemporary to the publication.

First edition clandestinely printed in 175 copies on laid paper, each individually numbered.
 
Bound in full mint green morocco, spine with five raised bands framed by black fillets, subtle restoration to spine colour, date gilt at foot, endpapers and pastedowns of combed paper, gilt fillet border on pastedowns, original wrappers and spine preserved, all edges gilt, chemise edged in mint green morocco, covers of cat's eye paper, white felt interior, an elegant binding signed by Alix.
 
A very rare and handsome copy bound by one of the most distinguished binders of the second half of the twentieth century.

 

Rare first edition. This book is said to have been printed in Sedan.

Contemporary full brown speckled sheep binding. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Red morocco title label. Headcaps and corners skillfully restored. Good copy.
Voltaire attributed this violent pamphlet against monastic life to Abbé Du Bellay and made extensive use of it in his Philosophical Dictionary. The author addresses the work to Hermodore, one of the dialoguists of the Secret Conversations. Pithois is said to have compiled writings by Camus, particularly his Response to the Conversations of Hermodore, as seen in the title on p. 1.

Second edition, revised and expanded after the sole edition of 1714 by Pierre Auguste Miger. This second edition was never reprinted. With a frontispiece by Leroy. Rare.
Later binding in half polished green sheep, circa 1820. Smooth spine decorated with 5 restoration tools. Boards rubbed. A good copy.
