First edition of this Latin work devoted to the history of the ancient Mediterranean: Sardinia and the influences of Greece, North Africa, the Syrtes and Numidian tribes, the history of the tyrant of Syracuse, the Balearic Islands, Corsica, the island of Rhodes, and more (cf. Adams, L-704. See Durling, 2796, which records only later editions).

Restored full brown calf binding, spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt tools now largely softened, blind fillets and gilt corner ornaments framing the boards, central gilt medallion enclosing a device in Greek characters, manuscript inscription on the fore-edge, early binding.

Third edition, first octavo published in Basel after two folios published in Paris in 1550 and 1554 for the first text. The two following texts are in first edition. Text in single column, 33 lines per column. Not in Brunet.

Full speckled brown calf binding, 18th century. Spine with five raised bands decorated with red morocco title label, gilt compartments and fleurons. All edges red. Upper board joint cracked along its entire length. Minor wormholes on first board and at foot of lower board headcap. Three corners bumped. Pale dampstains. Minimal wormhole damage on first endpaper.

Autograph letter signed by Honoré de Balzac to Gustave Silbermann, dated 18 May [1846], with the blind stamp of the Hôtel des Trois Rois in Basel. A delicate document, with fold marks that have caused some tears with some minute lacks of paper, affecting a few letters, including the last two letters of the author's signature.
A fine epistolary testament to Balzac's unrestrained passion for art collecting, in this likely unpublished letter addressed to his friend, the Strasbourg bookseller and printer Gustave Silbermann. Balzac was planning a stay in Strasbourg, during which he became engaged to Madame Hanska.

First trade edition, issued after just 50 deluxe copies.

New edition. Although we have found no trace of this Basel edition, the first edition was published in Venice by Aldus in 1527 (with a different collation). Not held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and absent from French catalogues. Oxford holds an edition with the same date. English catalogues mention several copies at different dates. Printed in italic type.

Emanuel König (1658-1731) was a German physicist and physician from Basel. Strangely, this classic description of the animal kingdom, which includes a rigorous anatomical and mechanical approach, is classified as a work of spiritual magic in the 17th-century library of occult sciences. However, this work served as a basis for Swedenborg in his writings.

The editio princeps of this text dates from 1516, printed by the Aldine Press in Venice, but according to Brunet (IV, 454), although rare, it was made from a poor manuscript and was executed carelessly, which gives full importance to the edition we present.
