"CARAYON, Émile, Adolphe, né à Paris en 1843.
Il fut successivement militaire, peintre-décorateur, puis relieur vers la fin du XIXe siècle, son atelier était situé 10 rue de Nesles, à Paris; c'est là quil œuvra de 1875 jusqu'à son décès, survenu le 26 janvier 1909, alors qu'il était âgé de soixante-cinq ans. La maladie l'immobilisait depuis de longues années déjà, mais il avait conservé toute sa force de production, et ses reliures impeccables de façon faisaient toujours l'admiration des connaisseurs dans les expositions.
Ses cartonnages montrent quel parti un véritable artisan relieur peut tirer des matières les plus simples, les plus économiques. Il est vrai que les cartonnages de Carayon sont souvent ornés sur le dos ou sur les plats d'aquarelles originales signées Louis Morin, Henriot, Robaudi, Rudaux, etc. Mais même sans décor les couvertures de parchemin ou de vélin ou même de papier, toujours admirablement choisis, prenaient dans les mains de Carayon un aspect harmonieux.
Après sa mort sa fille adoptive, Marie Brisson, formée par lui, continua ses cartonnages et fit en outre des papiers marbrés jusque dans les années qui suivirent la guerre 1914-1918." (Julien Flety, Dictionnaire des relieurs français)
