Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great Moderns

This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Pierre BRISSAUD

Born23 décembre 1885
Died17 octobre 1964
LanguageFrench
NationalityFrance
A cousin of the illustrator Bernard Boutet de Monvel - who also contributed to the Gazette du Bon Ton -Pierre Brissaud trained in Cormon's studio at the École des Beaux-Arts, alongside André-Edouard Marty.

He first came to public attention when he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1907, though his reputation did not truly flourish until 1912, when he began collaborating with the newly founded Gazette du Bon Ton.

His style sets him apart from his fellow contributors, who were resolutely oriented towards Art Deco: Brissaud instead drew his inspiration from children's book illustrators, such as the British artist Randolph Caldecott, similarly reinforcing the outlines of his figures with a bold black line. For the Gazette, he illustrated the creations of Louise Chéruit with great felicity, employing flat areas of sustained colour ranging from a warm orange in Bonne chasse! to cool pastel tones in Je suis perdue. Alongside his handling of colour, Brissaud brought a particular attentiveness to light, and his play of chiaroscuro lends his scenes an intimate and singular atmosphere.
