    First printing of the 25 magnificent engraved plates printed on China paper as well as the 300 vignettes by Tony Johannot, Baron, Français and Célestin Nanteuil. Original wrappers preserved. Complete with the placement sheet for the engravings.
    Publisher's binding in full dark blue percaline cloth boards. Smooth spine decorated with special tools, an angel holding a lance and an oriflamme. Upper board decorated with a large plaque, a baroque portico with central title, blind geometric frame. On the second board a knight, blind frame. Percaline of the headcap slightly worn. Corners somewhat rubbed. Scattered foxing. Some gatherings yellowed. Fine copy.

    One of Johannot's best productions who seems to excel in the horrific and fantastic register, like his achievements in the Voyage où il vous plaira. Philippon de la Madeleine's prose translation draws the originally verse epic towards the novelistic. Orlando Furioso, completed in 1532, was one of the great successes of baroque literature, which influenced all the fine arts.

    New translation by A. Mazuy. The 3 volumes are illustrated with a portrait of Ariosto as frontispiece and 85 wood-engraved figures printed on China paper and mounted on strong paper. They are numbered from 1 to 85. The 3 volumes properly contain the placement sheets for the engravings at the end and the errata. This beautiful illustration, a romantic vision of the chivalrous Middle Ages, is the work of Meissonnier, Baron, Français, Girardet...
    Contemporary full glazed calf binding in violet. Smooth spine decorated with Rocaille tools in long and mirror patterns. Gilt title. Boards stamped in blind with a large ornamental plate in Renaissance style. Gilt framing fillets. Interior frieze. Lemon-yellow endpapers. Tissue guards present. Some occasional scattered foxing on an otherwise clean set, the tissue guards often browned or foxed. Signs of rubbing. Cracks on one lower joint at foot. Spine uniformly blue-green.
    Very handsome copy, rare in this condition.
    The work is completed with several studies by the translator, notes on chivalric romances, oriental traditions, chronicles, songs of the trouvères and troubadours. An index of proper names in Orlando Furioso.

    A handsome illustrated edition and one of the first printed by Gabriele Giolito de Ferrari, dedicated to the Dauphin of France. It has a superb engraved title with Giolito's printer's device (a phoenix being reborn from its ashes on a globe marked with the printer's initials), 56 attractive woodcuts and numerous large ornate capitals, as well as a portrait of Ariosto after Titian in a medallion at the end of the poem, and two states of the printer's device.
    The end of the work is made up of a vocabulary of obscure words and an explanation of the difficult passages in the work compiled by Lodovico Dolce, with a separate title and not included in the pagination. Giolito published more than twenty books in thirteen years of printing – this is the third edition of this work, the first appearing in 1542 and the second in 1543.
    Printed in round Roman type, double column.
    Late 17th or early 18th century red morocco, spine richly gilt in six compartments, one compartment marked with “lettres rondes [round Roman type]”. Covers with a frame of triple gilt fillets, gilt roulette frame to insides of covers, all edges gilt. Binding a little rubbed, faint dampstaining to end of volume.
    A handsome copy in a lovely red morocco binding.

    New edition of the French prose translation, established by V. Philipon de La Madelaine and first printing of the illustrations.
    Half red shagreen binding, spine with four raised bands decorated with triple gilt compartments adorned with gilt floral motifs, red paper boards, a light scratch to front board, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, top edge gilt.
    Work illustrated with 300 vignettes as well as 25 plates printed separately on China paper by T. Johannot, Baron, Français and C. Nanteuil. Occasional light foxing without serious consequence.
