Adam Seybert (1773-1825), a distinguished physician, chemist, and mineralogist, served as a Democratic Representative for Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1809 to 1815 and again from 1818 to 1819. It was during these years that he assembled the material for this work, first published in English at Philadelphia in 1818. He subsequently travelled extensively in Europe between 1819 and 1821, returned again in 1824, and died in Paris.
