Boncerf was Turgot's secretary whose theories inspired the work. Its ideas were revolutionary, with the author demanding the emancipation of both property and persons, proposing to authorize the redemption of all feudal rents, duties and servitudes. The book caused an unprecedented sensation and the authorities immediately saw the danger of the advanced theories, condemning the work to be burned on February 23, 1776. An intervention by Turgot prevented Boncerf from being condemned. 32 editions appeared until 1791, sometimes under Turgot's name.
