Jean Nicolas Demarquay (1815-1875), surgeon, presented his doctoral thesis in medicine, Recherches expérimentales sur la température animale, in June 1847. He was chief surgeon at the Dubois nursing home. He was interested in hypnotism and published numerous works on surgical procedures. Great friend of Auguste Duméril, physician, member of the Institute and of the Royal Academy of Medicine, he published with him and with Lecointe a pamphlet entitled Recherches expérimentales sur les modifications imprimées à la température animale par l'introduction dans l'économie de différents agents thérapeutiques, in 1852.
