Gaspard-Adolphe Chatin (1813-1901) was Professor of Botany at the École de Pharmacie, of which he became Director in 1873.
"His remarkable researches on plant anatomy, organogenesis, physiology, the composition of sap, the respiration of fruits, and the assimilation of iodine secured his election to the Académie de médecine and the Académie des sciences (1874), of which he served as President in 1897. He trained numerous pupils and helped popularise botany through his public field excursions."
Autograph presentation inscription from the author at the head of the upper wrapper to the botanist Antoine Passy (1792-1873), one of the founders of the Société botanique de France.
