Rare first edition, printed in a small number of copies and illustrated with 3 plates, including 2 folding colour maps.
A very good copy despite some minor foxing to the wrappers and a vertical crease to the front wrapper.
The text presents the conclusions reached by the naturalist William Carpenter (1813-1885) following the deep-sea exploration carried out off the north of Ireland from 1868 to 1870 alongside Sir Charles Wyville Thomson (1830–1882).
Copy belonging to the biologist Jean-Louis-Armand Quatrefages de Bréau (1810-1892), with his ink stamp in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.
