The author, Antoine-Paulin Pihan (1810-1879), who was proficient in Arabic, Turkish and Persian, was merely a proofreader in the Oriental typography department of the Imprimerie Impériale. Yet the number of linguistic works he left behind reveals an orientalist of far greater stature than such modest duties might suggest.
