Foreign Literature

Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Autographed and signed autograph letter from Rene Depestre, to his friend Alice Raillard, in which he thanks her for the kindly criticisms she made about her novel, probably "Hadriana in all my dreams" published the same year at Gallimard. : "... These are the words of a critic who are familiar with the work of Jorge Amado (Alice Raillard is the translator of many Portuguese-speaking authors including Jorge Amado of whom she is a close friend) and the best of other contemporary literatures "
He also told him of his inconsolable regret that he could not meet her in Brasilia during a tribute to their mutual friends Jorge Amado and his wife Zélia because he loves Brazil: "... find a country that I love, and that is, by far, mine. "
Finally, after some health problems, he admits to writing again: "... I'm working on a collection of short stories: Eros on a Chinese train (which will be released in 1993), it's the sequel" d ' Hallelujah "which amuses me a lot ..."
