Sonnet autograph signed by José Maria de Heredia entitled "The conch" published for the first time in 1893 in the famous collection "The trophies", masterpiece of the poet. Our manuscript poem has variants with the printed one and found on page 147 of the "Trophies". "Oh, who will ever say conch fine & pearly In how many oceans; for how many winters; You supported, with the fiery shock of lightning, The tumultuous afvant of the high tide. Now, under the sky, among the green fuers, You made yourself a soft bed in the golden arena, But your hope is vain; long and desperate, In you cry for ever the dark voice of the seas. My soul has become a sound prison: And as in your bosom weep and sigh again A weakened regret for the great clamor; So, from the depths of this heart too full of her, Sad, slow, insensitive and yet eternal, Always goes up a strange & confused rumor.
