New edition, the earliest to include Gilbert's illustrations dates back to 1856, the publisher having expanded the text based on unpublished material available at the time of publication. A frontispiece portrait and numerous wood-engraved illustrations after John Gilbert.
Contemporary publisher's binding in full dark green shagreen. Spine with raised bands decorated in compartments; roulette at foot. Succession of hot- and cold-stamped border fillets on covers. Decorative gilt board-edges. All edges gilt. Handsome copy.
