Extremely rare never-published and true first edition, which remained as a proof copy under a blank cover printed for Gallimard proofreaders; the deluxe paper copies announced (13 pur fil and 1,050 Bonet hardback publisher's bindings printed on esparto paper) were never printed. Printer's imprint dated July 31, 1944, the entire print run of this edition has been destroyed. Small tears to corners and lacks of paper to margins of the boards, three light spots on the second board; traces of discoloration due to glue on the bare spine, intended to welcome a softcover that, to our knowledge, has never been produced. An extremely rare work, one of probably only a few dozen copies printed for Gallimard proofreaders.
