Publisher's full cream cardboard binding, smooth spine decorated with cold-stamped fleurons, important plate designed by Delannoy and engraved in red, representing a pediment framing a bull's-eye on the front cover and architectural element stamped in red as central ornament and double fillet frame designed by Delannoy on the back cover, publisher's binding.

Le Journal illustré is a French weekly newspaper created in February 1864. It is designed on the model of the Penny Illustrated Paper published in 1861 in England. It is illustrated with large wood engravings and covers magazine subjects in eight pages in 27 x 37.5 cm format. A few years later, it was integrated into the press group of Le Petit Journal.
Designed to compete with L'Illustration which sold for 75 centimes, Le Journal illustré was sold for 10 centimes. It disappeared in 1899 when the illustrated supplement of Le Petit journal, illustrated in color, belonging to the same group and sold since 1890, supplanted it.
