It was illustrated with large wood engravings and covered magazine subjects in eight pages measuring 27 x 37.5 cm. A few years later, it was integrated into the press group of Le Petit Journal. Designed to compete with L'Illustration which sold for 75 centimes, Le Journal illustré was sold for 10 centimes. It disappeared in 1899 when the illustrated supplement of Le Petit journal, illustrated in color, belonging to the same group and sold since 1890, supplanted it. Numerous collaborations, including Aristide Roger, Charles Darcours,... Compositions and drawings by Giacomelli, Méaulle, Meyer, Clerget, Kauffmann, Alphonse de Neuville, among others.
