First edition of the two series published respectively in 1835 and 1836. 36 steel engravings for the first volume and 40 for the second, totaling 76 engravings engraved by various English engravers and printed on strong paper, under tissue guards. A large title vignette and a frontispiece in the second volume, both dated 1836, therefore could not have been part of the first.
Green half morocco signed Boutigny. The second volume, although using the same tools (and the same endpaper), and coming from the same workshop, is in a noticeably different binding (bound two years later), in navy blue half shagreen, the ensemble being ultimately more aesthetic than if the color were similar. Romantic gilt tool along the spine, gilt title. Very fine blue marbled paper. Despite some minimal foxing at the tissue guards and in the margins, very fine copy. The selection of works highlights the great sites of Europe, including even Mont Saint-Michel, and universal representations, such as Don Quixote. Each work is accompanied by an introductory text.

Rare handwritten inscription from Josef Pankiewicz to [Moïse] Kisling.
Illustrations. Three light, minor snags at the top of the spine, tiny marginal tears without pieces missing at the top of the first board, otherwise pleasant copy.

In 1906, Pankiewicz was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Notably, one of his pupils was Moïse Kisling whom he encouraged to abandon sculpture in favor of painting. He introduced the young man to French painting and more specifically Cézanne and Renoir. In 1910, on the advice of his mentor, Kisling – aged nineteen years old – left Poland for Paris where he quickly became a significant figure of Parisian artistic life.

Aussi, comme il s'est mis volontiers à dauber les bourgeois, les messieurs qui ne sauraient distinguer une pelle d'un râteau ! Chacun de ses dessins est une satire.' ‘this is a work that will cause a sensation. The author is a vehicle lashing out at the lazy and idle bourgeoisie. (...) Courbet could scarcely find a text whose spirit was better suited to his talent. The Franc-Comtois must have rejoiced in this plea in favour of peasants, the formidable children of the earth. Also, since he was willing to ridicule the bourgeois, gentlemen who could not tell a spade from a rake! Each of his drawings is a satire.' Very rare.

The preface contains a paragraph by Klopstock (the German editor) and Fuessli. Court painter to the King of Poland, he joined the Spanish court at the behest of Charles III, King of Spain; his paintings, quite early in the neoclassical taste (see his Cleopatra), secured him fame and wealth, and the writings he left on painting and the arts are marked by research and subtlety.

Signed autograph letter from a page by Louis Pons, to his friend the art critic Georges Raillard, specialist in the works of Joan Miro and Antoni Tapies, about a work on Monticelli that he recently received from a their mutual friend and for whom Georges Raillard wrote the text.
On the attached envelope which he recomposed in his fanciful and ornithological manner, Louis Pons drew, in black ink, on the front and on the back, two curious beasts: a magpie in a tail coat and a rat of which just the head and the tail emerge from the envelope, the place of its body being crossed by a nail.
Finally, on the sidelines of the handwritten letter, Louis Pons drew a character of human appearance with simian features.
