    First edition of this very rare memorandum advocating the establishment of a Chair of Natural Law at the Collège d’Autun (entrusted to the lawyer Bouheret).

    No copies recorded in either CCFr or WorldCat.

    The authors of this Dijon-printed text, mindful of their educational mission, examine the Utility of Natural Law from several perspectives—Religion, Government, and the various orders of society. They refer to Abbé Gédouin and his Dissertation sur l’éducation, to Mably’s Entretiens de Phocion, and to La Chalotais’s Essai d’Éducation nationale ou Plan d’études pour la jeunesse, both published the previous year. Burlamaqui’s Principes du droit naturel et politique (1694–1748), likewise issued posthumously at the same period, are mentioned, as are Cumberland’s Loix naturelles, translated in 1744, whose theses—close to Pufendorf and refuting Hobbes—reinforce the authors’ position. Printed in Dijon, this work reflects the depth and importance of the contemporary debate on natural law, a principle central to the Physiocrats, whose theories would shortly be developed and formulated by Quesnay in his celebrated Physiocratie ou constitution naturelle du Gouvernement le plus avantageux (Leiden and Paris, 1767–1768).

    A handsome copy, as issued, preserved in its original plain temporary wrappers, with small tears to the spine.

    Binding in half morocco green morocco, smooth back decorated with a central and gilded floral pattern, golden date tail, marbled paper plates, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, blankets (dirty and doubled) preserved, binding of XIXth posterior of a few decades at work.
    Rare book illustrated with a portrait of the author and an off-text figure engraved on wood by Eugene Forest.
    Our copy is enriched by a signed autograph letter of three pages Antony Thouret to his publisher Ladvocat in which it is particularly question a second edition of the book which will be enriched with a second preface, some scenes main and a quantity of interesting notes.

    This publication gives precise details of the rules of the Lodge, its makeup and the rights and duties of each member, in function of their status. This is followed by general and specific dispositions of the Lodge (conditions of admission and voting, affiliation).

    New edition, the very first dating from 1517. Text in two columns. Decorated initials and tailpieces, and 6 in-text figures of genealogical trees.
    Contemporary full vellum binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with 6 black fleurons. Boards stamped at center with a black olive crown, blind border and black tools in the corners. Center of upper board torn away with a large loss (12x18cm). 2 splits at head. Corners heavily bumped, 2 of which are bare.
    French jurist born in 1480 and died in 1540, Chasseneux provided in his principal work: The Customs of Burgundy, a model and major source for French customary law which even served in the elaboration of the Napoleonic Code. This has been reprinted many times since the first of 1517.

    Rare first edition, illustrated with a frontispiece map and 7 plates by Joubert and engraved by Adam.
    Later half green shagreen binding, circa 1860. Spine with Jansenist raised bands. Spine sunned, turned brown. Wide margins, except at head. The engravings have smaller outer margins, the text leaves not having been trimmed.
    The author establishes the remarkable history of Autun, not its extensive history. He dwells particularly on its great antiquity, at the time when it was the capital of the Aedui, one of the most influential peoples of Gaul, which had many cities under its dependence. The Aedui, whose power was broken by Rome, founded Milan when crossing the Alps. Autun under Roman domination, then barbarian invasions and introduction of Christianity. History of the counts of Autun. Its belonging to the duchy of Burgundy. In addition, one finds chapters on the cathedral of Autun and the remains of antiquity.
