Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Handwritten signed postcard from Biarritz addressed to his best friend Roger Nimier

Biarritz 1957 | 15 x 10.5 cm | a postcard

Humorous handwritten postcard signed by Antoine Blondin addressed to Roger Nimier at Gallimard, written from Biarritz and depicting a smiling pin-up girl seen from the back.
Laisse message. Merci. à toi. A.
P. S. Admirable auto-portrait !” “I'll spend Friday evening and night in Paris. You've got me, see program on the back, so to speak. I'll call you at Sébastien (in other words Gallimard then rue Sébastien Bottin) around 6p.m. Leave message. Thank you. A. P.S. Admirable self-portrait!”
As the anarchist he was, Antoine Blondin surrounded the “A” of his signature with a circle.
A humorous testimony of the complicity and the fraternal friendship that united these two revellers, leaders, “Hussars” “despite themselves.”
When questioned by Emmanuel Legeard on the great friendship he showed Roget Nimier and the myth of the Hussars, Antoine Blondin declared: “Ce sont les hussards” qui sont une invention. “These are the hussars” who are an invention. A “Sartrean” invention. In reality, the story is, my friend Frémanger, who had started publishing, had a single author, Jacques Laurent, and a single employee, me. Laurent wrote and I tied the bundles of books. So, we got to know one another, we were friends, and on the other hand.. on the other hand, Roger Nimier was my best friend. I saw Nimier everyday. I saw him everyday for thirteen years. But Laurent and Nimier didn't see each other at all. They had very different ideas. We have only been together once. We met on rue Marbeuf, at the Quirinale, for lunch. We discussed Italian wine and cooking noodles. For two hours.”
