Original anonymous watercolor depicting the bay of Palermo inscribed in the lower margin: Palermo. The rione of Santa Lucia, the historical district of Naples, is depicted as it was in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the Vesuvius spitting smoke at the bottom of the composition. This type of Neapolitan watercolors was popular among wealthy European travelers, who performed the traditional "Tour d'Italia", a pilgrimage through the bucolic landscapes and large cities of Italy.
