New edition, decorated with a frontispiece repeated in volume II (title pages in an engraved frame). The first edition dates from 1722. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Havana morocco title-label. Upper joint cracked at head. One lack at head. One corner slightly bumped. Good copy, fresh. Count Oxenstierna (1666-1733), from a great Swedish family, wrote these maxims and thoughts directly in French. The Count was sometimes called the Montaigne of the North. There seems to be no subject on which the Count did not produce reflections: on spectres, on brutality, on youth, on performances...
