Second edition, after the first published in 1684. Contemporary full blonde calf binding. Spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons as well as a red title-label. Gilt roulette on edges and headcaps. All edges speckled red. Handsome copy. The work was written after the publication of the Nouveaux dialogues de mort, and is connected to it only by the literary device of giving voice to the dead, a genre which was very popular in the 17th century. Through a series of letters, Lettres des Vivants aux Morts, Requête des morts désintéressés... Fénelon presents a satirical portrait of the political events of his time.
