New edition of these two works by the marquis. The first of l'univers énigmatique appears to have been published in 1759, and that of le Véritable mentor also in 1759. Full marbled and glazed brown calf binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title label. Damage with lacks at head. One corner severely bumped. Handsome copy. A polygraph and philosopher, the marquis de Caraccioli endeavors in this work intended to illuminate certain enigmas of Christian faith, to construct the foundations of a modern faith in accordance with the Enlightenment, thereby strongly opposing the deists. A preface was added for the second edition of le Mentor. This treatise on education had considerable success, more than all the marquis's other books; it bases educational excellence on a good tutor, and accuses the era of not producing great men for want of sound education.
