First edition. Contemporary full calf binding. Decorated raised spine. Rubbing to boards and corners. By Noël, known as Bonaventure d'Argonne. Also attributed to Abbé Pierre de Villiers and to Pierre-Jacques Brillon, author of the 'Apologie de Monsieur de La Bruyere et du théophraste moderne...', which is a response to the present work, according to Barbier CG, III, 1124. The work is a scrupulous commentary on La Bruyère's characters, beginning with a general appreciation, then examining and critiquing each theme and each maxim.
