Statement of second edition, revised and corrected. Title page in red and black. The first edition appeared in Latin in 1700. Full brown speckled calf binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title label. Tail headcap worn. Upper joint cracked at tail. One corner bumped. Very fresh copy. 18th-century engraved armorial bookplate of Mr. Varenne. The first flagellants appeared in the 11th century and the movement gained renewed vigor during the Black Death in Europe, thus reaching its peak during the 14th century. This movement was quickly condemned by the church as heretical and millenarian. The movement quickly became anarchic and a threat to order, both of the church and of society. The pope handed them over to the inquisition in 1349, and the King of France Philip V banned flagellants under penalty of death.
