My Prisons are the memoirs of a man incarcerated by arbitrary power. Following the Neapolitan and Piedmontese revolution against the Austrian occupier, all personalities including Silvio Pellico were imprisoned for ten years at Spielberg in Moravia. The text achieved great success once published due to its pious character, Pellico having found hope only through the Catholic religion. The work also contains poetry.

It is well known that Young's Nights enjoyed considerable success and many editions. Le Tourneur's famous translation accentuated the lugubrious side and the emphasis of the original, and contributed in France to making the work more famous than in England, making Young the leader of a new dark and pre-Romantic poetic school whose roots originated with Milton. Even his tragedies were considered the finest plays of the time, notably Revenge, an imitation of Othello, and he is considered to have been one of the principal figures of eighteenth-century English poetry at the origin of Romanticism.

Achille Devéria (1800-1857) is a French painter, illustrator and engraver, student of Girodet-Trioson. He is a recognized illustrator and published numerous lithographs (Contes by Perrault, Don Quixote, Robinson Crusoe, La Henriade...). In 1849, he was appointed director of the prints department of the Bibliothèque Nationale and assistant curator of the Egyptian department of the Louvre.
The famous portrait of Honoré de Balzac as a young man (1825) is attributed to him. He painted in his Parisian studio on rue de l'Ouest. Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas (père), Prosper Mérimée, Franz Liszt and numerous other artists and writers came there to be immortalized.

Céleste de Chateaubriand, the author's wife, had founded this hospital in 1819, an institution whose mission was to welcome elderly priests and noble women who had become widows during the Revolution. Located on rue Denfert, at number 86 as indicated by this invitation, this institution still exists and welcomes retired Parisian priests. Lacks not touching text at the location of the seals.

Like Walpole's Castle of Otranto, The Recess is one of the first Gothic novels, not yet inhabited by the formulas and stereotypes that would exhaust the genre itself, but it already contains all the ingredients that would make it successful: spleen, melancholy, terror, settings of ruined castles and abbeys, secrets surrounding an obscure birth. This novel above all marks the superiority of English fiction, with a plot and narrative writing much more mature and developed than The Castle of Otranto. Two sisters live in the underground chambers of a castle, and the novel gradually unfolds the discovery of this strange situation. We read in the Historical, Literary and Anecdotal Memoirs drawn from the correspondence of Grimm and Diderot: "it is the story of a daughter of Mary Stuart and the Duke of Norfolk, a tissue of romantic incidents, sad, implausible, but whose sequence has nevertheless I know not what charm that can engage readers who love this kind of work."
