    Illustrated with 31 original wood engravings in colour by François-Louis Schmied, including the frontispiece, 6 full-page, 15 compositions in the text and 9 ornamental initial letters.

Traces of folds inherent to the letter's envelope insertion.
    The Catalan artist writes to his friend about newspaper articles, including one published in the Catalan daily l'Avui: "Voici l'article que tu m'as demandé. J'ajoute un de l'AVUI où j'amplifie quelques détails. Merci encore pour ta présence à Sénanque. Nous pensons beaucoup à vous et envoyons nos félicitations pour le petit-fils..." ["Here is the article you asked me for. I'm adding one from l'AVUI where I expand on some details. Thank you again for your presence at Sénanque. We think of you often and send our congratulations for the grandson..."]
    An exhibition by Antoni Tàpies had been organized at Sénanque Abbey from July 9 to August 29, 1983.

    Signed autograph letter by the British sculptor sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey, to the Saint-Paul Cathedral's committee, about his four monuments to military heroes from the Napoleonic wars commissioned by the government.
    Sir Chantrey, leading portrait sculptor in Regency era Britain, carved the portraits of Major-General Daniel Hoghton, Major-General Bowes, and Colonel Henry Cadogan, and (in a single monument) Major-Generals Gore and Skerrett.
    He gives in this letter an estimate for five marble statues of generals from the British army, four of which have ultimately not been selected by the committee and replaced by other names.

    Trained in the studios of Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Léon Gérôme, Dagnan-Bouveret received the second prize of Rome. Of naturalist inspiration, he devoted himself to religious painting and had a prolific career as a portraitist at the end of his life.     Known for his Breton subjects in realistic style, Dagnan-Bouveret painted during 1890 young conscripts drawn by lot to perform their military service. The youngest is depicted draped in the tricolor flag which he brandishes. "If the painter Dagnan-Bouveret created realistic portraits of these conscripts, it is almost certain that these men experienced fire during the First World War" (cf. expositions.bnf)

    The painter thanks the journalist for "des lignes si bienveillantes que vous avez bien voulu me consacrer à propos de mon envoi au Salon. [...] je serais heureux de vous le prouver en vous offrant un petit morceau de peinture, si vous voulez me faire le plaisir d'accepter" ["such kind lines that you were good enough to dedicate to me regarding my submission to the Salon. [...] I would be happy to prove it to you by offering you a small piece of painting, if you would do me the pleasure of accepting"]. Carolus-Duran had presented a portrait that the famous writer Joris-Karl Huysmans had greatly appreciated: "Le portrait de Mme La Comtesse de Trois Etoiles rayonne au milieu de ces pauvretés.     The artist discusses the forthcoming engraving of a famous painting with very controversial attribution: the Apollo and Marsyas, acquired in 1850 by English collector Morris Moore who maintained, despite the opinion of numerous curators, its attribution to Raphael. Exhibited in London, Paris, Vienna, Venice and Milan, it was finally acquired in 1883 by the Louvre museum for the sum of 200,000 francs. Its attribution is now given to Perugino.

    The artist gives his authorization to the famous journal L'Illustration to reproduce one of the portraits ("le portrait en gris de Melle XXX") ["the grey portrait of Miss XXX"] that he presented at the first Salon du Champ de Mars, in 1890. This painting received good reviews, notably in the Revue des Deux mondes: "[...] M. Carolus Duran est pourtant un portraitiste rare et supérieur par la sincérité qu'il apporte à rendre, dans tout son éclat et toute sa variété, la première et saisissante apparence des êtres vivans, par l'aisance et par la verve avec lesquelles il les campe et les anime dans la vérité de leurs allures, de leur air, de leurs ajustemens. [...] la troisième, Mlle S..., une toute jeune fille, une brunette fraîche et rose, en toilette de ville, porte un délicieux costume gris, avec ceinture et jabot rosés" ["M. Carolus Duran is nevertheless a rare and superior portraitist through the sincerity he brings to rendering, in all its brilliance and variety, the first and striking appearance of living beings, through the ease and verve with which he positions and animates them in the truth of their bearing, their air, their attire.
